Montreal is a wonderful city to live in, with a rich cultural history and present. The best part about life in Montreal? It is a city of alternatives.
There are alternative school boards, alternative moving companies, alternative theatres, alternative eateries. If you thrive on choice and innovation, this is the city for you.
Packing up for a long distance move can be challenging at the best of times, so here are 3 important things to know about Montreal before you move here to help you acclimate yourself to La Belle Provence.
Montreal Government Services
They're in French. Particularly the websites. Some are translated into English, but be prepared for the fact that if you want information in a language other than French, you might have to work for it. The English/French divide in Quebec is a topic for another post, but for now, be prepared to get on the phone when organizing your provincial and municipal moving details. The phrase that will get you through: "Est-il possible de parler en anglais?" (Is it possible to speak in English?" - They almost always say yes, or transfer you to someone who can.)
Montreal Public Transit
Montreal Transit is composed of the bus system, the metro (subway) system, the shared resources system and the commuter train system. Depending on where you live, at least one of these will be affecting your life intimately.
The buses and Metro are run by the Societe de Transport de Montreal, or http://www.stm.info/english/a-somm.htm. The commuter trains, which you'll use if you live outside the urban core, are run by the Agence Metropolitain du Transport, or http://www.amt.qc.ca/home.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1&LangType=1033
Montreal Construction
I hate to be the one to break this to you, but when you're moving to Montreal it's only fair to be prepared for the construction. It's everywhere, it's slow, it's dusty and it's never, ever going to end. If you're using a Montreal-based moving company, there will be no problem with this, but if you're moving long distance, you should advise your driver of the possibility, and plan an alternate route, just in case.
Getting in and Out of Montreal
If not arriving by car, you can get into Montreal through the local airport, greyhound bus depot or train station. The train and bus stations are very central, and the airport is just a hop skip and a jump away by transit, car or cab.
